'They're owls, aren't they?' asked the white cat.
'That's right,' said the small girl.
'And owls know everything, don't they?' asked the white cat.
'That's right,' said the small girl.
'So if I asked them a question, any question at all, they'd have just the right answer. Isn't that right?' asked the white cat.
'Probably,' said the small girl. 'Yes.'

'I'm going to ask them something,' said the white cat.
'Don't do anything silly,' said the small girl.
'It's a perfectly good question,' said the white cat.
'Show respect,' said the small girl.
'I will,' said the white cat
'Be polite,' said the small girl.
'Yes,' said the white cat.

The white cat twitched his tail.
'Hello,' he said.
'Hello,' said the dishevelled little owl.
'Hello,' said the first little owl.
'I have a question,' said the white cat.
'What is it?' asked the dishevelled little owl.

'It's quite complicated,' said the white cat.
'That's all right,' said the dishevelled little owl.
'It's quite big,' said the white cat.
'Go ahead and ask,' said the first little owl.
'Okay...' said the white cat.
He took a deep breath.
And then he said, 'Why am I a cat?'

'Oh, that's easy,' said the first little owl.
'It's what you do best,’ said the dishevelled little owl.
